Why can family be so difficult? My mother-in-law likes to remind us, at every given opportunity, that you never turn your back on family and you never side with anyone over them because “in the end they will always be there for you”. I love the irony of this statement, because if they will truly be there for you no matter what then if you sided with someone over them it shouldn’t make any difference It is one of the ‘subtle’ ways that she likes to remind both her daughter’s partner and myself that we are not part of their family and at the end of the day she believes her children will side with her over us. I like to point out that for many people family is not supportive and can be the most destructive people in their lives – I have only once mentioned how two of their nephews (brothers) had virtually no contact because one of them was gay and the other one was religious, and how that blows a big hole in her argument.

I do wonder though, whether my partner would support me over them. I don’t push the issue, although I am given many reasons to from both of his parents, I guess a little part of me is scared with what the outcome might be. After all, family has a strong hold over us, guilt plays a bigger part in some of these relationships and my partner is a very lovely non-confrontationalist

They go home in the morning so hopefully this time I won’t have to see what the result would be.
